Tarnovo Ultra 2022

The seventh edition of the Ultramarathon of Veliko Tarnovo!

In 2022, we're going back to where it all started!

The finish arena will be located at the Asenevtsi monument, overlooking the whole historic part of the city. Starting in the city centre of the old capital of Bulgaria - this is the only MTB and Trail running race, that finishes in the city centre of a regional capital in Bulgaria. The routes include incredibly beautiful tracks and amazing views, on the way passing through two medieval fortresses!

For 2022 you can choose between three trail running distances - 13, 33 and 53 km, two distances MTB - 30 and 48km, and of course the traditional Duathlon - 48km MTB + 33km Trail! Enjoy our variable terrain, hard and challenging profile, perfectly marked route and breathtaking views!

Welcome to Tarnovo Ultra 2022!

The History

We came up with the idea in late 2015 and Tarnovo Ultra was already present in 2016 - with distances of 43km Trail Running and 43km MTB. In the following years we developed a lot.

We organised starts and finals in the medieval fortresses of the city - Tsarevets and Trapezitsa and we added longer as well as shorter distances, aiming to make the competition more interesting and challenging for the competitors, more exicting and picturesque for the viewers. For our 5th and 6th edition we moved to Marno Pole park - in the perfect centre of the city to make it more open to the public.

And now, for our seventh edition, after the event came close to 900 competitors in 2021 and way too big for the city centre, we're going back to the place of the first Tarnovo Ultra - the magnificent Asenevtsi Monument - overlooking the whole historical part of the old capital, just minutes away from the city centre

The Competitors

We started with about a hundred competitors in Tarnovo Ultra 2016, which started sunny, but ended in a torrent with its route including 6 Orthodox monasteries. We then had 300 racers, who endured dehydratation at the scorching Tarnovo Ultra 2017 and 400 at the even hotter Tarnovo Ultra 2018. Then came Tarnovo Ultra 2019, marked by heavy rain, puddles and rivers of mud with more than 450 competitors. In the pandemic 2020, we moved to the summer, because of sports event ban in the spring and therefore we became one of the biggest events of the year with more than 600 competitors.

2021 exceeded our bravest expectations as we had over 200 bikers and over 650 runners at the starting line.

Through all these years we've always tried to fulfil the expectations of everybody and to meet every complaint with a smile and transform it into a attempt to become better. We are thankful for all the support through the years to all our competitors

Who we are?

Brown Team Sports Club is a member of the Bulgarian Orienteering Federation and since its establishtment it has always been in top 3 of the club classification, performing equally well in foot orienteering, MTB-orienteering and Ski-orienteering. That's why all the income from Tarnovo Ultra goes directly for the development of our team and for new training maps for sports orienteering. We are one big family not only in the organisation of Tarnovo Ulta, but also when attending orienteering competitions almost every weekend. Because of our experience, acquired from one of the most competitive sport environments in Bulgaria - this of orienteering - which has given our country European and World Champions, you can be sure that all race and organisation aspects of Tarnovo Ultra 2022 will be at the highest level possible.

We are looking forward to meeting you on 09th and 10th of April 2022 at the Asenevtsi monument in the centre of Veliko Tarnovo!
